Arbeit als Liebe. Liebe als Arbeit.
Brigitte Dätwyler (CH) & Lena Maria Thüring (CH)
The video work Arbeit als Liebe. Liebe als Arbeit. (Work as Love. Love as Work.) was developed in cooperation with (FIZ) Advocacy and Support for Migrant Women and Victims of Trafficking.
The title is a reference to the publication Arbeit aus Liebe, Liebe als Arbeit: Hausarbeit im Kapitalismus (1977) by Barbara Duden and Gisela Bock. Even today, most of the house- and carework is carried out by women - often in precarious circumstances and by women with a migrational background. Many migrant women who are advised by FIZ carry out socially relevant care work as cleaning staff, child carers or geriatric nurses - work that is poorly paid, receives little recognition and is very demanding. This also applies to the five protagonists in the video.
The video is a comission for the anniversary of 500 years of Reformation, which the city of Zurich commemorated in 2018. While wives received a certain legal protection in the course of the Reformation, single women came under increasing suspicion under the new Zurich moral laws. They were criminalized and pushed to the edge of society, like the women denounced as witches. Women who were different or appeared strange, whether because of their origin, their behaviour or their moral attitudes, were marginalised. These historical circumstances are the starting point to address the subject of the continous exclusion of minorities and violence against women.
